Old plaster walls

There is nothing I love more than aged, plaster walls, and I have been wanting that look for years. I finally just did it.

I had some fabulous inspiration photos...

This one from Spanish photographer Montse Garriga Grau HERE.

This one from Sweet Southern Vintage...

For my version, I first used joint compound, which I scraped on and off until I got the look I wanted. After it dried, I sanded just a bit, then painted with "Geneva Swan Grey" Colorplace paint in a flat finish from Walmart. I then mixed a couple different shades of light grey and brown and brushed them on where old walls would naturally be darker. It was not that easy, but I love the look.

I changed a few things on the buffet including adding this inherited vintage lamp, and my dwarf Alberta Spruce in the ice bucket.

My mom brought over some old family photos which I just propped up and decided I liked them that way, so they stayed.

I was honestly not sure if I liked it when I started, but I kept on going and was still not sure until I started putting the window treatments, etc., back up. I love it now, and I'm glad I took the risk.

I did the hall too.

This is definitely not a look for everyone, but it definitely gives some character to the room.

We like it, and that's what counts! What have you been inspired to do in your home?

Thanks so much for stopping by! Please come by my Far Above Rubies facebook page because we really are having fun over there chatting and sharing ideas. I love for you all to post your photos there too, so come on by.

  11. I can't imagine how much work this was but it is amazing. You have created an entirely different style in this room, all your very own. So many different objects that you have pulled together perfectly like they were all meant to be. It truly is a magazine-worthy room.

I love your wall treatment. You were brave to attempt it. I don't think I would because I would be afraid I wouldn't like it.

    Looks beautiful.
I have done something similar in our den.. It was a mom and son project and we ended up having an all out war with the dry wall compound.. what a mess we had to clean up. But we had fun and the end results (after the clean up) was great!
    The entire room is luvly.
    Hugs, Gee

  20. I love it...great job...just subtle enough for great depth!

I have plaster walls and have done some faux painting on them but I think I will update them with this look, perfect for my 106 year old house.

  21. Love the look!! My sister is an artist and has been using that compound for years....she recently did a woman's dining room on a horse property with birch trees as her subject, using the compound, and different paints....it is very 3D, and she has since then had many commissions from that one home. It is stunning! Your work looks lovely.

  23. I love your sofa! You have given a personal touch to your home and that truly is what counts when making ones space reflect your taste. Right now I'm just trying to get organized and stay sane amongst remodeling in the house. I will leap with joy when the main floor is put back into order. The dining room is becoming a staging place as we gather stuff to redo the kitchen with. My fridge is hiding in the DR. Well, if you can call it hiding. She's been there way too long.

    God bless,
    d
