Countertop progress...really:-)

Try to cut off the water with three children at home and you will know why we waited for the first day of school to put in the countertop.

Burlap has been pretty hot lately so I wanted to share some of my favorite projects with you...especially since you are probably tired of seeing me in the wood shop:-)

Choosing the right finish and going for it...

I agonized for days over what kind (water or oil-based) and color of finish to use on the wormy chestnut countertops. I made a lot of samples with extra wood.

Joining antique wood for countertops...

The countertop building continued today as we got all the boards glued and clamped. My countertop is really taking shape now!

Countertop making part IV...

Making wood countertops...part III

Let me warn you now, this is not going to be pretty. But if you want to learn to make countertops the hard way, this post is for you:-)
We started the day with our beautifully planed 150-year-old wormy chestnut boards thinking we would get the edges straight, then fit them together, join with biscuits and get them glued.

Countertop making and the ongoing sink saga...

We got a great start preparing the wormy chestnut boards for my countertops today, despite the threat of rain. You can see part one, pulling off the boards, HERE.

Countertop progress...

Even though the weather looked like rain, we were able to take all the wormy chestnut boards we needed for the counters today before the sky opened up. It's amazing how something that seems so simple and easy as taking boards off a house can drag on and on.

Country flowers

I have certainly had lots of beautiful flowers to bring in the house all summer here in the mountains.

My friend Bonnie brought these from her garden when she came for lunch a few weeks ago. Is that not the sweetest bouquet?
