The red chairs

So I have these two white chairs - the plycraft Eames-style lounger and the french chair.

Quite honestly, as cool as the plycraft chair is, Luis really doesn't like it. My kids LOVE it but what I needed there was a comfy chair that Luis can chill in on Sunday afternoons. Seriously, he works 20-hour-days, and he loves to sit here on Sunday afternoons, so I want it to be a comfy spot.

After some searching online, I found this recliner that I really liked because it doesn't look like a recliner. I'm just not ready to go full-out recliner mode yet y'all! But, as cheap as this is, around $275 with free shipping, my $0 budget would not allow me to buy it unless I sell the other two.  And I would love to have two of these as I think they would coordinate with the white couch nicely.

So I listed the two chairs on craigslist as well as facebook sell sites, but have not sold either yet.
In the meantime, since I took both chairs to another location to meet potential buyers, I put the antique channel-back chairs I borrowed from my mother in this spot.

Now, I am seriously in love with these chairs and love the upholstery. They have seen a couple different versions since my mother inherited them, but I'm digging this bold paisley print currently because of the richness it brings to the mostly white room.

The stool goes with another chair, and is not even covered. I just pinned on some extra fabric to see if I liked it. I actually bought more foam to make this stool taller when I do eventually recover it.

I love how the kilim pillows really keep these old chairs from feeling too stuffy.

And I have added the orange along with the red, which I love as well to keep things fun and a little more modern. Plus, since *everyone* else is using pink now, this is going to be my spring and summer aesthetic:-)

I have planned to put the cream overdyed rug back in here for spring, but haven't gotten around to it yet.  I'd love a creamy shag or flokati here, but no budget for that, and the cream overdyed rug would work very well.

Definitely these are not as comfy as a recliner would be, but for now I'm sure loving how they look in here, and they are perfect for sitting, chatting and having a cup of coffee.
And they're so cheery and happy.
And I'm all about happy and cheery these days.

So what do you think about the recliners?  Don't you think they'd just be perfect??

    1. Me too Diana! They just make me smile when I walk in there! I'm sure I'd miss that richness there as well.

  • Love the style of the recliners. I'm looking for recliners that don't look like recliners! Hope they're good "sitters'! Also that the hardware and mechanics hold up! My favorite color is RED sooo I LOVE your red chairs. Please let us know how your recliners work out!

  • The recliner is just perfect but your mother's chairs look great in the room. Do you really need the recliner ?? Maybe we are just partial to red.

    1. Yes, those Chinese ancestors were inherited from the same family member who gave us the chairs and lots of other things:-) My husband is not a fan of them, but I love them!!

  • Sorry, Anita, but I'm not a fan of the red patterned chairs. I'm so in love with your homespun fabric and kilim pillows and your georgous brightly colored woven rugs that I resent the chairs taking away the attention from those pieces. They appear old fashioned to me, but maybe that's a positive for you since they come from family. I think the recliners would look amazing and would offer no competition to the otherwise outstanding native handwoven look you've made work so well.

    1. Well, respectfully, I don't think they look old fashioned, especially paired with bright orange and the kilim pillows:-) Maybe in a different room with all traditional elements, certainly. But, that's the beauty of bohemian style and mixing opposites (modern with antique) is what makes it so interesting and appealing for me. It will be a while before I could order the other chairs anyway, but I'm happy with these for now:-)

  • I love those red (fuschia?) chairs. But I think the neutral recliners will look even better. Can you take the fabric you put on the stool, and make pillows out of them? Then use those on your new recliners? I have read your blog for many years and know you are great at making pillows. I really enjoy your blog and style. Fuschia and orange are a favorite combination of mine as well, and was actually my wedding colors. Ummm...22 years ago!

  • I am afraid the recliner isn't your dream chair at all. Maybe you could look for a used lazy boy , they make a chair called THE Riley. It does not look like a recliner. Check it out. I love what you put there.

  • I prefer recliners that don't look like recliners, too, but much as I love the tufting & nailheads on the beige chairs, IMO they're too bland. I'd probably save up for leather chairs with tufting & nailhead trim, but then I lean more toward traditional decor.

  • Love the channel back chairs; love the entire room. Great style.

  • The channel back chairs look great. So nice that you have something to use in the meantime. I like the recliner you chose too. I find your blog refreshing because you are one of the very few that I follow that uses color. Your home is beautiful.

    1. Oh thank you so much for that! I just cannot go all white and copy those "farmhouse" blogs that all look the same. I just feel there needs to be something different.

  • Well Anita, Hope you're up for another opinion... IF your husband is tall, his head may NOT be supported by the smaller, pretty recliner, in any position, and his legs MAY dangle uncomfortably off the footrest. I will not admit to exactly how I know this, but will say I had to put the old chair back and sell a week-old recliner.

I love the way you decorate and fearlessly mix pattern and color. Keep being true to you!

    1. Robyne, yes, I'm acrtually concerned about that, and according to the measurements, though, the back should be high enough. But yes I do know there is probably not a pretty one that does not have those very issues -- especially the feet hanging over thing. I told him he was much too young for a comfy soft one like my dad has! Ha! He actually relaxed in the red one today and was ok with it, but I know he'd like a comfy chair:-)

  • I love the borrowed

FYI. I bought a cheap, doesn’t- look-like a recliner from Macy’s a few years ago. I just gave it away to the Salvation Army. It did not hold up and the cushion was cheap. I wish I had saved my money and bought a Lazy Boy. I also hate my Pier 1 couch for th same reason...I should have kept my Bassett sofa and had it recovered. :-(

I was able find a real Ekornes chair for my guy on CLfor $400.

To replace my chair I bought the Farlov from IKEA..same problem...terrible foam. I spent $70 buying a replacement foam cushion from a place in Florida...the cheapest source I could find...the IKEA foam was piecemeal and had a sheet of hard plastic in the middle...like a cheap baloney sandwich!

  • I wish I could find a quality recliner for $275! Our Lazy Boy has been around since 2000, and is still in good shape, but the fabric is UGH! It needs to GO! They make one that's similar to your find, but it's around $1000!

  • I thought I was the only one who sold something first to buy something new! My home is always changing because I do that! I've been mulling over buying a chair for our livingroom for awhile now too! I like the red chairs, I like that they match one another but aren't matchy with the rest of the room. (Does that even make sense?)

  • I love your chairs. Your room looks so inviting. If I put together that room it would look like I bought a bunch of yard sale stuff and just dumped it in the room. Your room looks amazing, great job!
